MHRD team visits Kashmir to discuss special package; skips Jammu! | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 22: With no let up in complaints of discrimination with Jammu, in the latest, a team of Union Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) visited Kashmir to finalize special package for Jammu and Kashmir's Higher Education whereas no deliberations allegedly took place in winter capital region. Officials said the team led by Joint Secretary MHRD, held threadbare discussions with the academics in Kashmir including Vice Chancellors of various universities to decide about the package for the higher education sector in J&K. Officials however said the MHRD team has "given a miss" to Jammu. "Taking feedback and holding discussions with academics in both the region would ideally lead to all round development but here meetings are being held mainly in Kashmir and this is something that sets a bad precedence," said an official on the condition of anonymity. He said given the area of Jammu and the Higher Education facilities spanning over various regions including Doda and Rajouri, the MHRD should have focused more on Jammu to decide over the package. "But Jammu continue to be a story of unending discrimination," he said. Since the abrogation of J&K's special status on Aug 5, the plans for the development activities seems to be focused more on Kashmir. Just recently, as part of up-gradation of education facilities in Kashmir, the administration has given a go ahead for development of 25 model government schools in summer capital of Srinagar. No such plan seems to be in place for Jammu city. As per the officials, the administration has already released Rs 3 crores for the up-gradation of such existing government schools in Srinagar as model schools. In the last around a month, the administration is continue to shower incentives on Kashmir province, which actually harbours separatist sentiments and has been observing strikes against the historic decision taken by the Modi government. Someday ago, the government released additional Rs 28 crores for modernization of civic amenities in summer capital of Srinagar whereas no such special funds were granted for Jammu despite repeated appeals being made by the Jammuities. Despite repeated attempts, concerned could not be available for comments. |
