PLJ Foundation express concern over forest land acquisition for new court premises | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 23: Peace Law Justice Foundation has expressed dismay and reservations over acquisition of large chunk of forest land measuring 813 Kanals 13 Marlas for construction of new High Court/Subordinate Courts Complex at Raika-Bahu near Sidhra. In a statement issued through its Chairman M.J. Khan (Advocate), the members of the Foundation appealed to the Governor not to make any headway on this project as it would invite more trouble for Jammuities in the form of ecological imbalance. The Raika-Bahu forest is the only green stretch available near Jammu City along the River Tawi. It would not only wind up forest cover but also result in extreme pollution/further shrinking of River Tawi. It would also amount to felling of thousands of an age old trees on a large scale. It is worthwhile to mention here that High Court is doing a commendable job for the protection of Dal Lake in Srinagar but at the same time, the proposed shifting of courts to Raika-Bahu through acquisition of Forest land by the Govt. is not a feasible or fruitful project from any point of view. It would be more feasible and compatible to widen the Janipur-High Court Road as per the proposed plan already in place for widening of road and the Govt. should provide all the facilities in the existing High Court/ Subordinate Courts Complex with utmost priority. This will help in saving the State exchequer/ public money. The Governor must intervene and consider the objections raised by the people from all quarters in public interest. The signatories to the statement include M.S. Khan, Parvez Manhas (Retd. Revenue Officer), Vikas Sharma (Journalist), Showkat Ahmed (Social Activist), Zaheer Ahmed (Environmentalist), Rakesh Sethi (Social Activist) and others. |
