Shah holds meeting with senior officials to discuss Kashmir situation | | | Following severe tension on either side of the LoC the Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting the other day with top security officials and discussed the prevailing situation in the state, officials said. The hour-long meeting was attended by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba and other senior officials. The situation in the state is understood to have been discussed in the meeting. However, what exactly transpired in the meeting is not known immediately Jammu and Kashmir has been on the edge following deployment of additional security forces in the state last week. The administration of Jammu and Kashmir, which is under President's rule, has ordered curtailment of annual Amarnath Yatra and asked pilgrims and tourists to leave Kashmir Valley, citing terror threat. Outstation students, studying in the NIT in Srinagar, have also been asked to leave the campus and go home and not to return till further order. Following the deployment of additional troops and other steps, there have been rumours that the state may lose special status and Article 35-A. Since then the Kashmir centric politicians have been uneasy and despite the fact that most of them are under the House arrest still word has travelled to the youth to stage protest rallies. Already the Government has abolished the Legislative Council which has Assembly poll made uncertain. However, the Assembly elections are being held towards the end of this year. People have fears that since both the Houses could be abolished and the Kashmir valley could become a part of the Union Territory. And Kashmir centric political leaders from Congress, NC and the PDP besides the CPI(M) have plans to agitate against this step because they want elections to be held an d those whose fate has been favourable could enjoy either regaining power or regaining power. This way neither these Kashmir centric politicians are prepared to sit without power. |
