Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 26: In yet another move to seemingly appease the people of Kashmir since the abrogation of the special status on August 5, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has started a special program to encourage Kashmir youth to start poultry farming.
The animal husbandry department in Kashmir has started a multi-crore program whereby all the districts of Kashmir province are being offered assistance to "rear backyard poultry birds."
As per the scheme, the selected candidates who qualify the criteria of having requisite land, will be given upto 400 poultry birds to start their venture.
Official sources said special breeds of birds like Vanraja that can grow even on kitchen waste are being given to the jobless youth. "Such birds not only lay eggs in considerable quantity but are a good source of income when sold for eating," said an official on the condition of anonymity.
Sources said hundreds of youth in various districts of Kashmir province have already applied for the opportunity at various district headquarters.
"Many of them have already got the consignment of birds to start their venture, and by the spring of coming year such youth will be earning handsomely from these units," said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
Sources said the administration has been investing in such programs to "win the hearts of youth of Kashmir."
As per the analysts, however, "this is where the problem actually arises." "Why is government trying to pamper a region which has been protesting the abrogation of the special status?" asked an analyst.
He said instead of appeasing those who harbor separatist sentiment the government should have encouraged the Jammu region which has been wholeheartedly welcoming the historic decision of having scrapped the Article 370.
The scrapping of special status was expected to end the discrimination with the Jammu region but in the last over two months the administration has been "showering incentives after incentives on the people of Kashmir."
From offer to start poultry units to the Market Intervention Schemes started for the apple growers, many of the business schemes have been started in Kashmir, whereas nationalist Jammu continues to be a story of apparent neglect.
When contacted a senior official confirmed that poultry related schemes were being executed in Kashmir.
