Historical Chingus Fort becomes victim of Govt apathy | | | Rajesh Tandon
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 9: The historic Chingus Fort in district Rajouri despite having great importance with regards to history has been ignored by the Department of Archives, Archeology & Museums , J&K Union Territory (J&KUT) which can be gauged from its shabby condition. Although Chingus Fort has always remained a tourist attraction among the people due to its connection with Mughal era as it was constructed in 16th century by Mughal emperor Jahangir but the Archeological Department of J&KUT, which is taking care of this monument has done nothing for its upkeep. "The Mughal emperor during his journey from Delhi to Kashmir used to take Jammu-Poonch route and stay at Chingus Fort. It is said that the mortal remains of Jahangir were buried here in this Fort," locals said. The locals demanded its renovation so that more tourists come to visit this fort. "There is need of developing this place by providing facilities," they said adding that even Tourism Department has failed to explore its potential for revenue generation. There is no doubt that tourist spots in Jammu region have always been ignored by the previous governments and now they pinned hope to the new dispensation in Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir that such vital tourist points will be developed on a large scale. |
