Hartal dying fast in Kashmir after JK becomes UT | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 12: In a major setback to the separatist politics, the shutdown in Kashmir is dying fast since October 31 when the state of Jammu and Kashmir became a union territory. Whereas for the past over two months the shops would remain largely open only till 10:00 AM to remain shut for the rest of the day as a mark of so called protest against the New Delhi's decision, as of now the shops even in the business hub of Lal Chowk remain open till noon. The marketplaces in localities on the other hand even reopen shops after 4:00 PM. "One can say that the hartal has been reduced to mere four hour drama that starts from noon and ends at 4 PM," agreed a shopkeeper. For the areas of Kupwara, Tangmarg, Gulmarg and Magam the traders have resumed normal business for the entire day. The public transport in the shape of auto rickshaws and cabs has also resumed normal business for the entire day. For some pockets of Srinagar, including Jawahar Nagar and Sanat Nagar, most of the shops remain open for the whole day. A shopkeeper from Lal Chowk told Early Times that the trade community was fed up of hartal politics and looks ahead for police assistance to keep the business establishments open for the whole day. "If we get due police protection, we'll keep our shops open for the whole day," the trader said. A senior official said the hartal is now largely reduced to Srinagar and some pockets of south Kashmir whereas the government was working on a plan to restore normalcy at an earliest. "We are trying our best to restore complete normalcy at an earliest. Things will be normal by the end of this month," he hoped. |
