Admin starts release of mainstream politicians, three former CMs continue to be under arrest | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report srinagar, Nov 29: The administration of the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir led by Lieutenant Governor Girish Chandra Murmu has slowly but surely started the process of releasing the mainstream politicians who are under arrest since August 5 this year. Few days back five mainstream politicians belonging to different mainstream political parties were either released or shifted to the official residences from the sub-jail formed in the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir. All these politicians have been members of Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly and also served as ministers on different occasions. The administration ordered for the release of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Rehman Veeri, Democratic Party Nationalist (DPN) Chairman Ghulam Hassan Mir and another PDP leader Mohammad Dilawar Mir. At the same time, Peoples Democratic Forum (PDF) Chairman, Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen and PDP leader Mohammad Ashraf Mir were shifted from the legislators' hostel to their respective official residences. Veeri has been a legislator from the Bijbehara constituency in Anantnag district and has been a minister in the PDP-Congress and PDP-Bharatiya Janta Party coalition governments in the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir. Hassan Mir was a legislator from Gulmarg constituency in Baramulla district and served as a minister in the PDP-Congress coalition government. Dilawar Mir was elected from the Rafiabad constituency in Baramulla district and also served as a minister in PDP-Congress coalition government. Hakeem Yaseen was elected as legislator from Khan Saheb constituency in Budgam district and served as a minister in PDP-Congress coalition government. Ashraf Mir emerged as giant killer in the 2014 assembly elections after he defeated National Conference leader and former chief minister Omar Abdullah from Sonwar assembly seat and later on became a minister. It has been learnt that these mainstream leaders have been released or shifted on the condition that they would not issue any statement that would be detrimental to the overall situation emerging in the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir. Before the release or shifting of these leaders some of the other political activists were allowed to visit their respective homes for few hours for one reason or the other. It would be in place to mention here that three former chief ministers of erstwhile Jammu & Kashmir state are under arrest at different places. While National Conference working President and former chief minister Omar Abdullah has been lodged at Hari Niwas, Peoples Democratic Party President and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti has been shifted to private accommodation at Maulana Azad Road from Cheshmashahi guest house. National Conference President, former chief minister and present Lok Sabha member from Srinagar Dr. Farooq Abdullah continues to be under arrest at his residence at Gupkar. Dr. Abdullah's residence has been converted into a sub-jail and he has been booked under Public Safety Act (PSA) for disturbing public order. The PSA was introduced by National Conference and its aim was to take action against anti-social elements especially timber smugglers. In addition around 30 other mainstream politicians belonging to different political outfits were shifted to the legislators' hostel from the Centaur Hotel here. |
