Where is Delimitation Commission? | | | The Delimitation Commission which was all set to be formed soon after the J&K would have started functioning as Union Territory has not come into being till date. The delimitation would bring Jammu at par with Kashmir as far as the representation in the Assembly is concerned. According to the Reorganization Act 2019, the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir will have a 90-member Legislative Assembly and Jammu would be able to send 44 members instead of 37 to the House. Soon after the centre reorganized J&K, many people were happy with the fact that delimitation has been announced and Kashmir's hegemony over Jammu has ended. It has been a month since J&K is being directly governed by the centre but there has been no word on delimitation. Some BJP leaders in Jammu have been claiming that the process will begin soon and dream of people to see a Dogra becoming the Chief Minister of J&K will be fulfilled. It seems that BJP leaders in Jammu are feeling cornered as the demand for restoring J&K statehood is gaining momentum and this could become a bigger issue than delimitation. Many people in Jammu are asking a simple question what's the point in having a Dogra Chief Minister with minimal powers. Since 1947, whosoever Kashmiri politician has ruled J&K has enjoyed full powers. If the BJP wants to save its face, the Jammu based leaders of the party should convey to their high command that delimitation process should not be delayed as it is the need of the hour. If this process keeps on lingering on, it could provide an issue to the opposition in a platter and its potential of undoing all the work which centre has done during the past months. The opposition leaders are taking full advantage of the local BJP leaders not being able to counter them. The opposition leaders know it very well if the elections are announced in J&K without delimitation being held it would help them to come in a striking range to turn the tables on the saffron party in Jammu region. BJP leaders are trying to send a message that Assembly elections could be delayed and there is no need to hurry, but just a few days ago Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, Girish Chandra Murmu said that political process would begin soon. And LG's assertion carries wait. |
