Jammu awaits AIIMS | | | The Government of India has set January 2023 deadline for setting up the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Jammu. Union Minister of State (MoS) for Health & Family Welfare Ashwini Kumar Choubey recently informed the Parliament that the prestigious health facility in Jammu's Samba district would be completed within the next three years. When BJP entered into a post-poll alliance with the People's Democratic Party in Jammu & Kashmir in 2015, the central government initially announced AIIMS like facility for Kashmir region only. The BJP leaders from Jammu who were sharing power with the PDP at that point of time maintained silence over Jammu being ignored. However, people of Jammu launched an agitation and compelled the GoI to grant AIIMS for Jammu region also. After AIIMS was sanctioned, the Jammu based BJP leaders tried taking credit for it and made all the possible attempts to project it as their big achievement but Jammuites mocked at them. Since the day AIIMS has been sanctioned for Jammu region, it has hit many roadblocks. Identifying the site and acquiring the land for the health facility proved to be a time consuming process as the Kashmir-centric leaders, who were in power from 2015 to 2018 just didn't pay much attention towards this prestigious project. They simply ignored it. At the first place they were not in favour of Jammu getting AIIMS like health facility. People of Jammu have no expectations from the Kashmir-centric leaders but were hoping that the BJP leaders from Jammu would ensure that AIIMS is not delayed. But their hopes were dashed as the BJP despite having the Health Ministry in its own kitty in the erstwhile PDP-BJP regime just slept over the issue. Now, the Union Health Ministry has stepped in and things are looking up. One hopes that MoS Health setting up the 2023 deadline would be met and there will be no further delay. People of Jammu are eagerly waiting for AIIMS to start functioning soon as during the past 70 years they have been deprived of tertiary care hospital like SK Institute of Medical Sciences established in Srinagar. In absence of the specialized health facility, people of Jammu have to rush to other parts of the country to seek the treatment for even simple ailments. Its an expensive and cumbersome process. The AIIMS Jammu will cater to the entire population of Jammu division. It will help poor people to avail health care services at reasonable rates. People are hoping that the project doesn't jump to January 2023 deadline and it gets completed within the stipulated time frame. |
