Panchayat members' stir likely to prove counter-productive for BJP | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 12: Even as All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC) has ended its strike on Tuesday, brewing anger among elected Panchayat members is likely to be proved counter-productive for BJP in the days to come. During their week along agitation, agitating Panchayat members have targeted government in particular and BJP leadership in general for betraying elected Panchayat members. Interestingly most of the Panchayat members who were active in the week-long stir were associated with the BJP but most of the elected Panches and Sarpanches belong to the party, are annoyed with the leadership for backstabbing them. During the recently held Block Development Councils elections, most of the BJP supported Panchayats members had voted against party's official candidates because party leadership had given mandates to outsiders who were not even basic members of the party. Panchayat members while ending their strike had charged BJP led government at the Centre for only paying lip service to Panchayat members without bothering about real issues confronting them. They said government have no concerns for rural masses as they failed to clear Rs 1,000-crore MGNREGA liabilities despite repeated requests. Panahchayat members had also announced that Sarpanches and Panches would hold block level protests from December 20 to December 30 to bring J&K administration and the Central government out of deep slumber. Sarpanches and Panches would submit memorandums to their respective Deputy Commissioners from January 2 to January 12, 2020. They also announced that even if the government fails to resolve the genuine issues of rural masses and elected Panchayat members, they will gherao the Civil Secretariat in the month of March. |
