Sub-judge Jammu summons Prof Jasrotia in defamation case | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 26: In a significant order the Court of Sub-Judge (JMIC) Jammu Pawan Kumar Sharma in a defamation case filed by Prof GM Bhat (Ex-Rector Bhaderwah Campus and eminent Geologist) has summoned Prof Avtar Singh Jasrotia, Ex-HOD Department of Geology, University of Jammu who had leveled allegations in a press conference against Prof Bhat during the protest launched by the students, scholars and teachers of Department of Geology against the arbitrary functioning and misbehavior with the students of the Department of Geology by Prof Jasrotia as HOD. After hearing Advocate Muzzaffar Ali Shah appearing for the complainant and also considering the statements of complainant Prof Bhat and one witness Prof S K Pandita and after hearing the Compact Disc (CD) attached with the file, the Sub-Judge Jammu Pawan Kumar Sharma observed and directed, "there are some imputations being made by the accused against the complainant, which has hurt and lowered the reputation and image of the complainant in the society, as such a case is made out by the complainant against the accused in which the accused is required to be put on trial." In the complaint it is highlighted that Prof Jasrotia on December, 5, 2019 after his removal from the headship of Geology Department by the University Authorities held a press conference in his office/chambers in the Department of Remote Sensing and GIS and used abusive language and leveled serious, baseless and defamatory allegations against the complainant and accused him of being involved in corruption and openly said that complainant is involved in a scam of Rs 3 crore while serving as Rector Bhaderwah Campus University of Jammu. Not only this, Prof Jasrotia on-camera accused the complainant of being involved in a scam of Rs 1.50 crore for purchase of scientific equipment in the Department of Geology. Advocate Shah appearing for Prof Bhat vehemently argued that the complainant is an eminent Geologist and is known Worldwide and his services as Geologist have been recognized and appreciated not only by University of Jammu but several Institutes/ Universities overseas. Advocate Shah vehemently argued that the press conference of Prof Jasrotia was aired by several web portals/ social networking sites/news portals/print and electronic media and the baseless allegations leveled against the complainant caused immense damage to his reputation world over and there was no merit in the accusations as the same were leveled malafidely to tarnish the image of an academician known for his services to the society. After considering the submissions of Advocate Shah, Sub-Judge (JMIC), Jammu Pawan Kumar Sharma took cognizance of the defamation complaint and summoned Prof Jasrotia for facing the trial and the summon has been directed to be served through SHO, Police Station, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu for appearance on January, 11, 2020. -JNF |
