HC asks Govt to create public toilets around Dal | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 26: Jammu and Kashmir high court on Thursday directed authorities to identify appropriate points and take steps for creation of public toilets around the Dal Lake, observing focal point of visit by all visitors to Kashmir. "It needs no elaboration that the Dal Lake is a focal point of visit by all visitors to Kashmir. Lakhs of tourists, both international and national visit Srinagar and spend a large amount of time in and around the Dal Lake," a division bench headed by Chief Justice Gita Mittal observed while hearing a Public Interest Litigation. "However, we find that there are no public conveniences available around the Dal Lake to facilitate for the convenience of the visiting public. There appears adequate arrangements for garbage disposal as well," the court said and directed LAWDA and the Srinagar Municipal Corporation to immediately identify appropriate points and take steps for creation of public toilets. "Action taken reports be filed before the next date of hearing," the court said and posted the PIL for further consideration on February 25. "We also find that several complaints have been made of unauthorized construction which needs to be continuously scrutinized. It is therefore essential to have all existing structures video-graphed as well as photographed and a record maintained thereof," the court said. The Principal District Judge, Srinagar, who has already been appointed as a Nodal Officer was directed by the top court to video-graph and photograph all buildings and structures in and around the Dal Lake and also plot the same on a site plan. "Assistance of a photographer and draftsman may be taken for the above (same), the court said, adding, "It shall be the responsibility of LAWDA to reimburse all the expenses incurred by the Principal District Judge, Srinagar." |
