Karnah again cut off due to snowfall; no relief for people of Keran, Machil, Gurez | | | Early Times report
Srinagar, Jan 21: Border town of Karnah and dozens of other far-flung and remote areas were again cutoff on Tuesday due to fresh moderate to heavy snowfall since early Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, there was no relief for people living in cutoff border towns of Keran, Machil and dozens of far-flung and remote villages, including those near the Line of Control (LoC), where snow clearance operation to restore traffic to these areas was suspended due to fresh snowfall. Traffic on road leading to border town Gurez, which is surrounded by Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) from three sides, remained suspended for the past 20 days on Tuesday due to slippery road conditions and accumulation of several feet of snow. ‘’Traffic on Kupwara-Karnah road has again been suspended on Tuesday morning due to fresh moderate to heavy snowfall,’’ an official of Police Control Room (PCR), Kupwara, said over the phone. Vehicular movement was restored on Sunday to several far-flung and remote villages, adjoining to border town of Karnah, after remaining closed for about a week. He said snow clearing operation has been suspended on Kupwara-Keran and Kupwara-Machil roads due to fresh snowfall. ‘’The restoration of traffic on these roads has been further delayed due to fresh snowfall. Several inches of snow has added to already 7 to 8 feet of accumulated snow on these roads,’’ he said. Border towns of Keran, Machil and dozens of far-flung and remote villages were cut off from the district headquarter on January 13 due heavy snowfall. Razdan pass, connecting Gurez, Neeru and dozens of other areas near LoC with district headquarters Bandipora, remained closed due to accumulation of snow and fresh snowfall. A police official said that about 5 feet of snow was accumulated at some places on the road. “About 80 per cent of the road has been damaged and it is highly unlikely that these areas will be reconnected to district headquarters before March,” he added. The government has approved a tunnel at Razdan pass to make it an all weather road. |
