Maha Shivratri celebrated at JSS | | | Early Times Report
Kathua, Feb 21: Maha Shivratri or Great Night of Shiva is a festival celebrated in reverence of Lord Shiva in a special programme was organised in Jammu Sanskriti School, Kathua, on the eve of Shivratri. The students were told about Shiva who is known as “The Destroyer” within the Trimurti, the Hindu trinity that includes Brahma and Vishnu. In Shaivism tradition, Shiva is one of the supreme beings who creates, protects and transforms the universe. Shiva is also known as Adiyogi Shiva, regarded as the patron god of yoga, meditation and arts. The sacred mantra of Shiva ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ was chanted to begin the celebration. Students were dressed up in beautiful attires of Shiva, Parvati and Ganesha, exhibiting their spiritual aura the students performed an enactment on the Lord Shiva. Other highlights of the assembly were students dressed up as the Jangam. The Jangam or Jangama who are a Shaiva order of wandering religious monks. They are the priests or gurus of the Hindu Shaiva sect. Jangamas are also gurus of ‘Lingayat’ sect. The Jangam is the wandering holy man in Virashaivism. Mili R Sumbria, Principal Jammu Sanskriti School Kathua stated on the occasion that it is traditions and rituals like these that must be celebrated so as to strengthen values and inculcate good practices amongst students so that they grow up to be well cultured and responsible individuals.
