Stop playing politics | | | Aftershocks of communal riots in Delhi are being felt across the country. Everyone has cut across ideologies to condemn the riots and have urged the members of all the communities to maintain calm. As the peace is returning in the riot hit areas of the national capital many stories about people from different communities saving each other from rioters are coming to fore. The bond which has come to fore has once again exhibited that Indians are Indians first irrespective of them belonging to any community. Despite more than forty people dying in the riots a few politicians are still playing politics over the issue. Some are still issuing threats. It seems these politicians want entire India to burn. Media needs to act responsibly rather than holding debate over who will pay for the losses incurred during the Delhi riots. The material losses would be compensated somehow but the losses of the people who have lost their kith and kin in the violence would never get compensated. No amount or monetary compensation can bring the dead back. Riots in Delhi have dented India’s image across the world. Such incidents cannot be allowed to recur in any part of the country. People who are spreading misinformation on the name of Citizenship Amendment Act need to be nailed. They are trying to tell Muslims that the CAA is aimed at snatching their citizenship right but the fact is that the CAA is about granting the citizenship to the members of the persecuted minorities and it has got nothing to do with the Indian Muslims. Leaders of parties like AiMiM, led by Assadudin Owaisi, have been resorting to provocation even after Northeast Delhi witnessed a bloodbath. On Sunday one of the little known leaders of Owaisi’s party tried to add fuel to the fire by stating that “We have not worn bangles. We are being gentle by remaining quiet.” Prior to the riots breaking out in Delhi, Owaisi’s right hand man, Waris Pathan, had said, “Fifteen crore can overpower hundred crore.” One can understand that India is a democratic country and everyone has freedom of speech but that doesn’t mean that anyone can spit venom and pit one community against another. The leaders of other parties, including the BJP, who have delivered hate speeches in the recent past need to be told in clear terms that such utterances are unacceptable and a handful of people cannot ruin the social fabric of the Indian society.
