Farm Women from Leh nominated for L. M. Patel Award | | | Dr. Parveen Kumar, Dr. Kunzang Lamo, Dr. D. Namgyal
‘This could not have happened without the handholding and support of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK)-Leh’, this is how Yangchan Dolma reacted when she was informed that Agriculture Research and Development Foundation (ASPEE), Mumbai has selected her the prestigious L.M Patel appreciation award. Giving details Dr. D. Namgyal Head of KVK-Leh elaborated that ASPEE foundation is an agricultural research and development foundation recognized as a research institute by Council for Industrial and Scientific Research. The foundation is actively engaged in Agricultural Research, Agricultural Extension and Agricultural Education for the betterment of farming community. Every year the foundation gives awards to different farmers in different categories. Mrs. Yangchan Dolma has been nominated for the said award in the ‘Horticulture Category- Vegetable Nursery Run by Farmer and/or His Family’. She will receive an appreciation certificate as well as a cash prize of rupees 25,000. Mrs. Dolma has been adopted by KVK-Leh as an innovative farmer and is provided with the technological, advisory and diagnostic know how. The union territory of Ladakh referred to as the called cold desert is a combination of both arctic as well as desert climate. Standing at a height of 2900 m to 5900 m above mean sea level and is one of the highest and coldest Vegetable production is a major source of livelihood for peoples in this region. Yangchan Dolma is a 60 years old woman from village Saboo in Block Leh of District Leh in the union territory of Ladakh. Her husband Rinchen Tundup retired as a class one officer from the state planning department. The couple own about 2 hectares of land of which 0.5 ha is uncultivable. Of the remaining 1.5 ha; about 0.5 ha is under vegetable cultivation and rest under cereal crops. She grows different vegetables in the growing season as well as off season and in the open as well as in protected structures. The different vegetables grown by her include cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, carrot, potato, onion, coriander, Tomato and knolhol. For most of the vegetables she produce own seed. From the seeds seedlings are raised in nursery usually in small beds. In a year seedlings are raised thrice. During harsh winter the seedlings are raised in a green house. For raising seedlings she has four green houses. The seedlings are also sold in the local market. Mrs. Dolma by successfully integrating all the local resources from his farm has proved that agriculture is not a lost battle. For every one rupee invested by her she is getting back more than four rupees. Her vegetable farm also has a compost unit, a farm pond, solar drier and green houses. The vegetables are also processed by her for use in winter season. A recipient of many awards and recognitions at the national level, today she is an inspiration for all other farmers of the region. |
