Only hand pump at village Rajpura Mandi lying defunct for past one month | PHE Deptt declines to repair it | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 6: The only hand pump installed at village Rajpura Mandi of block Marh of district Jammu, which cater the availability of potable water to the residents, has been lying defunct for the last one month due to which the locals have been facing huge difficulty to meet out their daily need of water. Sources told Early times that the village Rajpura Mandi which falls in Ward No 9 of Panchayat Rajpura, has around 20-25 families, which are totally rely on this hand pump for potable water as there is no other source of water supply in the village but with the hand pump has gone out of order, the residents have been suffering a lot. “Ground Water Division of Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department, which had installed the hand pump has allegedly shunned its responsibility to repair the defunct hand pump by saying that now it is the responsibility of the Panchayats to look after its maintenance,” said Garu Ram, Tarsem Lal and Puran Chand, the local residents. Meanwhile, a local social activist, Satish Sharma told Early Times that not only this village even there many other villages in the block, where no PHE supply pipelines have been installed till date. “Although we lodged complaint with the concerned department for its immediate repair but shockingly concerned wing (Ground Water Division) declined to repair it and said that concerned panchayats will take responsibility to repair it but when concerned panchayat representatives approached the Block Development Department, they said that there is no financial provision for its repair with them,” he further informed. Satish Sharma said that even the matter was also brought into the notice of concerned Sub Division Magistrate Marh but till date no action has been taken to mitigate the problem of these poor villagers. “Due to apathetic attitude of PHE department, the residents have become the worst affected due non availability of water during this lockdown due to COVID-19,” he alleged.
