EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, June 11: In a shocking incident, a man was beaten by policemen from Panjtirthi Police Post, in Mubarak Mandi area when he along with his wife ventured out to get filled a pension application form of his specially-abled son on Tuesday evening.
The incident took place at around 8 pm near Mubarak Mandi area, when a police jeep came rushing towards a group of people who were sitting around the park. “I was walking around the park while my wife went to the residence of our relatives to fill the handicap pension application form of our son. After walking for around 10 minutes, I got tired and sat on a bench where two other ladies were also sitting. Suddenly a police jeep speedily came. Upon arrival of the jeep young boys standing there ran away in no time and the ladies sitting with me also ran towards a safer place”, said Purshotam, narrating his ordeal.
“Not knowing even what is happening, I also ran towards a secure and safer place but a cop named Rajan caught me up from behind and started beating with cane without citing any reason”, said Purshotam who had undergone two heart surgeries.
“The cop hit me hard around 40-50 times,” he stated and added that when he asked the reason for beating him, the cop replied that they had inputs that some people here consume drugs and wine.
“I repeatedly asked the cop to get me medically examined to know whether I have consumed any intoxicants or not, but the cop did not listen. Meanwhile, my wife also came back and asked the cop why he had beaten me, the arrogant cop did not reply anything and instead started pushing both of us into police jeep,” he further said.
The wife who saw her ailing husband mercilessly beaten by the cop told Early Times, “My husband is a heart patient and had undergone a heart surgery. Rajan knows us and about the health conditions of my husband and our family as well. My husband is a good man. Neither he consumes any intoxicant nor does he have anything to do with the bad elements of the society. Even suffering from these ailments we are unable to even meet our both ends. Both my children had also undergone heart surgery.”
“We are already having a pathetic life and now this act has made our life more difficult,” she said, and added, “I took up the matter with Deputy Mayor, JMC and orally complained about this incident and she assured us of action. But later in the evening, the cop started putting pressure for withdrawing the complaint. He sent many massages through influential people and relatives and is asking for an apology. Unfortunately, later Deputy Mayor mediated to save the cops and asked us for compromise and let go of the matter.”
When contacted, SSP Jammu Shridhar Patil said that police has not received any complaint in this case yet. “But I will look into the matter,” he added.
It is pertinent to mention here that a few weeks ago the officials of Panjtirthi Police Post had brutally and mercilessly beaten a boy, who went to buy vegetables with his mother.
