IFS officers rendered idle as important assignments given to local officers in Forest Deptt | JK losing green gold due to ‘laidback’ attitude of people at helm | | Ajay Sharma
Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 13: The Jammu & Kashmir government seems to be least bothered about the preservation of green gold in the union territory and same gets reflected every now and then by the steps taking by the people at helm. Early Times has learnt from sources that in the 14 forest divisions in Kashmir not a single Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer has been posted as Divisional Forest Officer (DFO). These forest divisions are being looked after by the local officers and given the local influence these officers are not able to discharge their duties in professional manner. “In the Jammu division out of the 15 forest divisions the IFS officers have been placed in only seven divisions. In the rest eight forest divisions the matters are being looked after by the local officers of the department. Here too the local officers are being influenced by the stakeholders and thus damage is caused to green gold,” said sources. Sources said that in Jammu division the IFS officers have been posted in the plain areas while as the local officers of the department have been entrusted with the responsibility of looking after the forest areas in hilly areas. They said that the IFS officers have been turned as idle since the forest cover is very less in plain areas. “In the hilly areas like Batote, Kishtwar, Bhaderwah, Ramban, Mahore and Rajouri the local officers of the department have been placed as DFOs. At the same time the IFS officers have been entrusted with the responsibility of looking after the affairs of forest ranges of plain areas like Reasi, Jammu and Poonch,” said sources. Sources said that a senior officer in the department manipulates the posting and placement of officers in the department and ensures that important assignments are not given to the IFS officers. They said that given the present situation there is no fun of having IFS officers in the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir. In the meantime, the officers working in the various allied wings of the department have said that they should be given the chance to work as DFOs in the department so that the green gold is saved. These officers have sought intervention of Lieutenant Governor Girish Chander Murmu in this regard and sought justice. Commissioner Secretary, Forests Sarita Chauhan could not be contacted for comments. Conservator of Forests, D Dass Mohan said that there is no need to talk to Early Times correspondent since the newspaper blows every issue out of proportions. |
