Hindi as J&K’s official language | | | The voices to make Hindi as an official language of Jammu and Kashmir are becoming shriller. Already a petition has been filed in the court in this regard. And civil society members in Jammu are discussing the issue threadbare. To make Hindi as an official language of J&K has been a long pending demand of Jammuities as the people living in ten districts of Jammu region can’t read Urdu. This language has been forced upon them as their official language, which makes no sense. The Kashmir centric politicians, who ruled J&K since 1947 took decisions as per their whims and fancies and made it a point to make Urdu as an official language of J&K. They didn’t pay any heed towards the fact that more than 50% of J&K’s population cannot read or write Urdu. Their politics and decisions revolved around Kashmir and Urdu was used as a tool to appease the people of one region only. Reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir has provided Centre with a chance to undo the wrongs which were committed during the past seven decades. Adding Hindi as an official language will bring respite for the people of Jammu region who during all these years have been forced to accept Urdu as their official language. Former political dispensations in the erstwhile State of J&K made no attempt to even to consider the demand of Jammu people. The politicians stuck with Urdu. When Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) joined hands with Kashmir centric Peoples Democratic Party in 2015 to form the government in J&K, the people of Jammu were of the opinion that BJP leaders would raise this issue. But soon after coming into power they forgot their promises and the pledges which they had taken. The BJP leaders shared power with PDP for more than three years but they did not raise the issues which they felt could annoy their friends in Kashmir. Now, the people of Jammu have themselves raised this issue and have taken the matter to the court and they are hopeful that things will now move in a right direction. The change in J&K’s status-quo post August 5, 2019, has made the people of Jammu hopeful that things will change for the better. Now it’s up to the government to meet their long pending demands and having Hindi as official language is a very genuine demand which should be met. |
