Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Aug 6: Jammu & Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor designate Manoj Sinha arrived here in the afternoon and later on drove towards the Raj Bhavan in a cavalcade. Sinha is expected to be administered oath by Chief Justice, Jammu & Kashmir High Court, Justice Gita Mittal on Friday.
The Lieutenant Governor designate arrived at the Srinagar Airport here in the afternoon today. At the airport he was received by Chief Secretary, BVR Subrahmanyam, advisors K K Sharma, R R Bhatnagar, Farooq Khan and Baseer Khan and Director General of Police, Dilbagh Singh. Senior civil and police officers were also present on the occasion.
Sinha replaces Girish Chander Murmu who submitted his resignation to President Ram Nath Kovind in the late hours of Wednesday. The President accepted the resignation of Murmu who became the first Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir. Following this the President issued the order of appointment of Sinha.
“The President has been pleased to appoint Shri Manoj Sinha, to be the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office,” reads a press release issued by the President’s secretariat. The communiqué also states that the resignation of Girish Chandra Murmu as Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir has been accepted.
A three-time Member of Parliament, Sinha served as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Communications and Minister of State for Railways in the previous term of the Narendra Modi government. However, he lost his Ghazipur seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha election.
Sinha has been credited with ensuring the completion of projects within set timelines during his time as Minister. Several people who know Sinha and have worked with him said, “He gets work delivered within the stipulated time, and has a very congenial style of working. He is always accessible to both officers and the public. He is a quick decision maker.”
In the first week of July 2016, when Sinha assumed the charge of the Telecom Ministry, the immediate task at hand was to achieve the target of BharatNet by connecting 1 lakh villages by broadband Internet by end of December 2017. He ensured that the target was achieved, delivering on a task that had been pending since 2014.
Sinha also applied himself to dealing effectively with the menace of call drops. It was during his tenure that the much awaited India Post Payment Bank was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2018.As MoS Railways, Sinha was assigned to look after the implementation of railway projects in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, which he again delivered on time.
Sinha, 61, has a B. Tech in civil engineering from the Institute of Technology, BHU, Varanasi. Born on July 1, 1959 in Mohanpura in the district of Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh, Sinha did his schooling under the UP board of education before going to IT-BHU. At university, he joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the BJP.
