Frontline COVID warriors face official apathy | Working on meager salary of Rs 3500, seek regularization | | ASIF IQBAL NAIK EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 15: The frontline COVID warriors working as Safai Karmacharis in District Hospital Kishtwar since last 12 to14 years are getting a meager salary of Rs 3500 which shows that the government has failed to recognize their unmatched contribution during the present crisis. Safai Karamcharis with their untiring efforts are working round the clock and are at the forefront of the COVID pandemic including dealing with and handling dead bodies of COVID-19 patients besides cleaning not only the hospital premises, but all those wards where dozens of COVID-19 infected patients are undergoing treatment for various complications. Speaking to “Early Times” these sweepers informed that their services are being used 24x7, but when the government decides to pay extra allowances and special perks or for that matter taking a decision on their regularization, they are being ignored since they are poor and have no say. “We too are working round the clock. When someone dies we are being asked to pack the bodies. No regular employee or those who are being paid handsomely never joined us. We too have family, we too have children at home, if something happens to us who will be responsible,” they said, adding that the government should consider their demand of regularizing their services. They said that the government must also think about them as well as about other employees working under Hospital Development Front (HDF), adding that beside their demand of regularization, the government must enhance their salaries and they must be bring under the ambit of the various beneficiary schemes announced by the government for doctors and other health workers.
