Protests mark Municipality’s anti-encroachment drive | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
UDHAMPUR, Sept 22: As the Udhampur Municipality today started an anti-encroachment drive at Ward number 21 in Kallar area and removed many illegal extensions, spontaneous protests against the initiative were held by the affected vendors. Municipal sources informed that during the drive about 12 illegal kiosks and six sign boards were removed near industrial area. Sources further informed that the illegal kiosks had been established by the outlets without any permission of the Municipality while the sign boards were also fixed without any such approval. Earlier, the municipality had demolished many illegal structures at W No 17 in Shiv Nagar area. However, the anti-encroachment drive triggered protests and wide spread condemnations. “I have no employment nor I am educated to do some job but I was earning my daily livelihood by selling vegetables and fruits at my kiosk which was removed by the Municipality today,” a kiosk holder told this reporter. Similarly, other vendors whose kiosks were removed also expressed strong resentment against the local body’s action. All the affected vendors also staged a protest demonstration and raised slogans against the Municipality.
