From Accession to Integration
10/29/2020 11:42:21 PM

Omkar Dattatray

Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have been the most controversial erstwhile state of the Indian union. Much has been written about this state but it had remained an eyesore for the separatists and fundamentalists and no efforts were made in the last over seventy years to fully integrate the state with Indian union. Instead of fully integrating the erstwhile state with the Indian union all efforts were made consciously or unconsciously to create the walls of distrust and mistrust among the people of the state, thus furthering the wall of separatism in the Jammu and Kashmir. During all these years the grand old party of congress was busy in milking J&K and thus furthering the distance between the Jammu and Kashmir and the union of India. Congress was concerned with only ruling the country and was practising the vote bank politics. The Congress remained busy with its favourite pastime appeasement policy for the minorities and nothing was done to integrate the Jammu and Kashmir with the Indian Union and the results are before us in the form of separatism, fundamentalism and militancy. It is also a fact that very little was done to crush militancy in Jammu and Kashmir for vote bank politics. The only objective of the congress is to stick to power by hook or crook and the same policy it is following at the present though the hard fact is that the Congress has been divested of the power through the power of the ballot. It would have been better had the ruling party of congress made efforts to integrate the Jammu and Kashmir with the India but it was not done for the reasons better known to the congress. The Muslim majority character of Jammu and Kashmir were fully exploited by the ruling party and it was milked for getting the much valued votes and thus vote bank politics was exploited for remaining in power and all this helped in creating superficial wall of mistrust between the J&K and rest of India and this is the tragedy and it is unfortunate. But now when the sincere efforts were made by the NDA government to fully integrate the Jammu and Kashmir with India much hue and cry has been made by congress and other parties again only for the vote bank politics. It is pertinent to mention that it was on 26th october1947 that an instrument of accession was signed by the Maharaja Hari Singh and Jammu and Kashmir acceded to India .This accession was like any other princely state but unfortunately the bogey of special provision and Muslim majority state was created and the state remained a head ache for the nation. While the congress and company made efforts to keep the states relation with India very delicate and do vote bank politics and this party never made efforts for the fuller integration of the state with India and the erstwhile state remained to give sleepless nights to the patriots and integrationists. But the only silver lining is that the nationalist forces have been fighting for the complete integration of J&K and extending the entire constitution of India to J&K`. Finally it was on august 5 and 6 that the parliament through a democratic process completed the legal procedure for the complete integration of the J&K to India and the rest is history. All this was done legally by passing a resolution in the central parliament and the amendment to article 370 was effected and the state was bifurcated into two union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh and thus the erstwhile state was fully integrated into India and all this was done through legal means but the congress and the mainstream regional parties opposed this integration and raised the bogey of snatching of the rights and special privileges of the people of the Jammu and Kashmir. These very political parties beat their chests over the integration of the Jammu and Kashmir because their chairs seem to shake in Jammu and Kashmir by these for reaching developments which sounded death kneel to the special provisions and fully integrated the Jammu and Kashmir with India. Thus we can say that the accession was turned into complete integration on the august 5th and 6th and Jammu and Kashmir became a federating unit like any other state of India and all credit for this bold decision goes to the ruling BJP and NDA and they deserve kudos for this. Thus has the erstwhile state integrated with India?
