Karva Chauth: Another precedent of women sacrifice
11/3/2020 11:33:15 PM

Shyam sudan

“Veero Kudiye Karwada; Sarv Suhaghan Karwada, Bahein Pyari Veera; Chan Chade Te Panni Pena “..these are the popular lines of song which generally sung by married women during their fast of Karva Chauth. Karva Chauth is an important festival of fast which is celebrated in northern part of our country. Generally married women celebrated this festival with devotion, fidelity and with the spirit of sacrification. From sunrise to moonrise generally women keeps fasting for the safety and longevity of their husbands life. It is a very strenuous excercise of fasting because even the water is prohibited during this fast it is very difficult to keep oneself hungry and thirsty all the day despite having lot of household chores. But due to their patience and tolerance generally women can easily follow this practice of karva chauth festival. Women eagirly wait for this day all the year. Especially for the newly wed women it is a great festival. This is a festival of mainly married women but few unmarried girls also celebrated this festival with same spirit of devotion and sacrifice. Lot of folklore and folktale related with this festival and its celebration. The popular tale of queen veervati is very famous behind this festival. Queen veervati who was the only sister of her seven brothers. when she was on the same fast of Karvachuath her brothers.
Put a duplicate and artificial image of moon in front of her. Basically there is a custom of offering to moon before opening this fast. Brothers of veervati were pained by seeing her sister in hunger and thirst. But all of sudden the husband of queen veervati died by incompletion of this auspicious custom of fast.she kept on weeping then goodess appeared before her and told her the real intrigue of her brothers. Then queen veervati again kept the fast with full devotion and the Lord of death resorted life to her husband. This is an example of a woman, affection, sacrifice and stubborn for his husbands life.Basically this fast is performed by women especially wives for the longevity of life of their husbands. In our patriarchal society we generally ignore the sacrifices and devotion of women. At the very early stages of their life mostly girls faces the social exploitation of every kind. Gender discrimination and disparity are the part of our so called civilized and advanced society. We generally treat the girls as a weak sex in our society. From physical aspects no doubt God has created this sex with some tenderness .But in every other field women are now competing with man in all spheres of life. Many social reformers has played their unique role in eradication of different social evils from our society. Now the many social evils like sati pratha, child marriage, pardha system, tripple talaq etc has been abolished from our society with the efforts of different social reformers and with the initiative of governments. But there are lot of such evils are still prevalent in our society. The practice of dowry, sex determination, gender discrimination are still practise by our society. There is need of a strong and decisive action against such evils and the follower of such evils.currently an important campaign of beti bachao beti padao”is very popular in our country. Basically these evils are in minds of people and their behaviour. Every year we have launched many programmes of women empowerment and upliftment.
But in reality the picture is different than our expectation it is said that if a girl become educated then she can educate the two families in her life. No doubt only a woman can give a proper moral education to her children in society. Because the life of a woman is an epitome of sacrifice, patience, tolerance and devotion. Karva chauth festival is the testimony of this fact. Those husbands who doesn’t care for their wives all the year and frequently misbehave with their wives must learn a lesson from this festival. Because on this day every women including those one who become the victim of their husbands atrocities remained on fast for the longevity of their husbands life. All the women performed this festival with great affection and respect ignoring all the bitter treatment of their husbands of all the year. After giving argya to the moon they see the image of their husbands from a sieve and took the blessing of them.In northern India it is very popular because in early times and even today the males of this region are mostly engaged in different defence forces. In old times mostly women of this region practise this festival for the security and safety of their husbands in their duty. Now it is celebrated across the entire country at different places with same devotion and motive. Now in different movies and in tv serials the importance of this festival highlighted.Basically karva means an earthen pot and chauth means the fourth day of the dark moon. Basically it is celebrated on the fourth day of the dark moon.Even in Mahabharata their is mention of this festival. Drupti too is said to have observed this fast for the safety of her husbands. The festival of rabi crop cycle coincides with this fast and it is believed that for the prayer of good harvest it is celebrated. Before the starting of this fast there is custom of pre dawn meal which is popularly known as sargi. Generally women who performed this fast gets up early in the morning and took sargi I.e some eatables and coconut water .it gives energy and strength to the fasting women for all the day.last year at some regions of North India moon was not visible due to dark clouds .Now people have related that with ill omen of corona pandemic. Because lot of people have lost their precious life this year. These are mostly myths related with this festival and there is no scientific base of such things. But we can’t interfere with someone’s religious belief and sentiments.we hope for the happiness and prosperity of all.
