Caught In Quandary
11/6/2020 12:49:08 AM
The Jammu and Kashmir government announcing the elections for District Development Councils has put the Kashmir centric parties in a tight spot. The newly formed Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) comprising of National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party and four other political formations had claimed that they won’t contest any elections till the Centre reverses its August 5, 2019 decision. There is no possibility about the Government of India even considering this demand. In the given circumstances these parties will be left with no other option other than to stay away from the poll process. The Kashmir centric parties, including NC and PDP, had boycotted the Panchayat and ULB polls held 2-years ago but had fielded proxy candidates. As on date their men have been owned by both the parties. If these parties decide to stay away from the DDC elections, they will once again lose an opportunity to come near the power corridors. If they decide to contest it would mean that they were hoodwinking people by raising hollow slogans. The only way out for them is to field proxy candidates and own them after some point of time.
Since the day J&K’s special status has been abrogated the Kashmir centric parties have turned irrelevant. The shape of politics has changed completely in the newly carved out Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. These parties can no more sell hollow slogans nor can they tell the people that Kashmir is an issue which needs to be resolved. All their slogans stand punctured. Now, they have coined a new slogan that they will get everything back which is next to impossible. Entire country has endorsed the decision of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi led government to abrogate J&K’s special status. As on date all the questions vis-à-vis Kashmir stand answered. There is no confusion in the minds of people and the violence has declined. The instigators are behind bars. The notion created by Muftis and Abdullahs that they only can run Jammu and Kashmir stands dispelled. So the Centre has got nothing to worry about. Most of the issues stand settled.
If Kashmir centric parties decide to stay away from the poll process it would be their loss. People and New Delhi are least bothered about their participation as the time has proven it beyond doubt that they don’t have any mass following.
