Kashmir highway, Mughal road closed for traffic due to landslides, fresh snow | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 23: Traffic was on Monday afternoon suspended on 270 Srinagar-Jammu national highway, connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, due to slippery conditions and landslides, triggered by fresh snowfall and rain. Meanwhile, historic 86-km-long Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, was closed since early this morning following slippery road conditions due to fresh snowfall. Hundreds of Kashmir-bound vehicles have been stranded at various locations due to closure of the highway. "The traffic on Kashmir national highway has been suspended due to shooting stones and landslides at various places on the highway, including in Ramban district, triggered by rain," he said. He said the road was also slippery near Jawahar Tunnel due to fresh snowfall. "About 250 to 300 vehicles are stranded on the highway," he said, adding traffic was plying from Jammu to Srinagar. He said the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, immediately put into service sophisticated machines and men to restore traffic on the road. The historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, has been closed for traffic due to fresh snowfall. Traffic on the road was recently restored after remaining suspended for four days due to snowfall. "We closed the road, seen as alternative to Srinagar-Jammu highway, because of fresh snowfall since early this morning," he said. There was heavy snowfall at Dubjan, he said, adding snowfall was also recorded at Pir-ki-Gali, Herpora and other areas on the road. The road was being used to transport fresh fruit from Kashmir valley to different mandis, including Jammu after frequent closure of the highway this summer.
