Srinagar markets take consumers for a ride as Jammu leads in discipline | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 29: While the winter capital of Jammu is setting example of being a disciplined city even in the times of Covid19 pandemic, Srinagar on the contrary, is in news for all wrong reasons of taking consumers for a ride. In Srinagar, from mutton rate to cab fares to rentals including hostel facilities for students, nothing is coming in accordance with the official directives. While the mutton sellers have gone for a strike after the government announced that mutton cannot be sold for more than Rs 480 per KG when it was being sold for Rs 600 per KG, no such complaints of fleecing of customers poured in from Jammu. In Srinagar, even the rental accommodation for students from far off places is coming at a “huge price.” Official sources said the students from other places living in Srinagar were being fleeced for the rentals. Sources said in the wake of huge complaints of overpricing, the Jammu and Kashmir government has constituted a committee to regulate the rates including those of private hostels in Kashmir region. A senior official said the problem with Srinagar is that the moment government issues regulatory orders, the concerned businessmen come up with press conferences and protests. “The gift of thirty years of militancy in Kashmir is that the people don’t want to adhere to norms but even contest government rate lists,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity. The cabs running across Srinagar, on the other hand, charge arbitrary within the city, the commuters said. Sources said about Jammu city, the government was getting “comparatively impressive feedback” about the discipline in business community and equally on how the concerned departments remain active to ensure that rates as fixed by the government are adhered to. When contacted a senior official confirmed that numerous complaints of overpricing were pouring in from Srinagar and that special committees have been constituted to ensure that the rule of the law prevails. |
