Mehbooba turns others mute | | | The differences within the Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD)—an amalgam of Kashmir centric parties—has put the conglomerate in a tight spot. President of Peoples Democratic Party, Mehbooba Mufti, who is also second in command for the PAGD is doing all the talking while other leaders have turned mute. Statements being issued by Mehbooba Mufti have put other leaders of the amalgam in a difficult situation. They seem to be unsure whether to endorse her statements or to reject these. If they acknowledge what she is saying they may end up annoying the people who matter and if they openly reject her assertions, it will lead to the beginning of an end of the Gupkar alliance. When the PAGD was formed the Kashmir centric parties, including National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party, had claimed that power is not their aim and they have come together for a bigger cause. But the participation of the PAGD in the ongoing District Development Council polls is an ample proof of the fact that these parties had joined hands only for power and had no other aim other than enjoying the privileges which they have been used to for the past so many years. There were speculations that Kashmir centric leaders, who were released before Mehbooba Mufti, had entered into an understanding with the administration that they won’t indulge in any such activity that would create any law and order problems. However, after Mehbooba has been released she has been spitting venom and it appears that she has donned the mantle of the separatists. Her aggressive approach has apparently brought all the top Kashmir centric leaders under scanner and they have been left with little to say. When the National Investigating Agency (NIA) arrested PDP youth president Waheed Para in connection with militancy related case, the PAGD maintained silence and did not issue any joint statement. The PDP was left alone to react. The disagreement over the seat sharing agreement in the ongoing District Development Council polls has brought to fore the cracks within the amalgam. The smaller parties are complaining that NC and PDP have not given them their due share, while the PDP is alleging that National Conference has walked away with a lion’s share. The prevailing confusion within the PAGD is a precursor of the events that would follow after these elections are over. Either the PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti will have to mend her ways or she will have to say goodbye to Gupkar alliance as others won’t like to pay for the mistakes she’s committing. |
