Hospitals, Govt buildings without fire-fighting equipment in Anantnag | Admin wakes up, constitutes committee | | Saahil Suhail
Early Times Report
Anantnag, Nov 30: Barring a few, the hospitals and other major government buildings in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district have no fire-fighting system in place, Early Times learnt on Monday. According to reports, the hospital owners have installed fire extinguishers but in most cases these devices have expired and the authorities don’t bother to replace them. “Leave private hospitals aside, even the fire extinguishers installed in government hospitals across the district have become defunct and the department hasn’t replaced them. It is putting the lives of patients at risk by not replacing these expired fire extinguishers,” they said. Reports said that the situation in other government buildings was also similar and most of the buildings weren’t having the fire extinguishers despite the fact they claim to have procured. Apart from hospitals and government buildings, the commercial complexes and other buildings were also lacking fire safety equipment. According to official documents, the Disaster Management Authorities and Ministry of Home Affairs have issued multiple directions and advised the hospital authorities to keep sufficient fire safety equipment and conduct mock drills at regular intervals, but it has been found that the authorities apparently have thrown the directions to winds. “In most cases we have found that hospital owners or the government itself installs a few fire extinguishers but under Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act this is not the only requirement,” Fire & Emergency officials said. Meanwhile, the administration in Anantnag has constituted a six (6) member committee for inspecting all government and private hospitals in the district. The members include, Deputy Chief Medical Officer Anantnag, District Health Officer Anantnag, Tehsildar, AD Fire Services Anantnag, AEE R&B and Dy SDRF Anantnag. The committee has been directed to inspect all the hospitals and conduct verification of registration of Nursing homes. District Magistrate Anantnag K K Sidha has also directed Chief Executive Officer Municipal Council Anantnag and Executive Officers of Municipalities to revisit all the permissions granted to medical institutions |
