EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Dec 7: Doctors at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Hospital, Jammu successfully identified and cured a 32 year-old-woman suffering from Central Diabetes Insipidus, a rare disease caused due to lack of vasopressin in the human body. The team of doctors was led by Dr Bhanu Pratap Singh, Senior Consultant Internal Medicine at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Hospital, Kakryal, Jammu.
The patient had arrived to the hospital with chief complaints of excessive water intake and uncontrolled urination followed by rapid dehydration. The patient was distressed as it was affecting her day-to-day life.
Speaking about the case, Dr Bhanu Pratap Singh, said, “Central Diabetes Insipidus is a rare disease which is not to be mistaken for diabetes. It is much more uncommon than diabetes and the treatment also varies. We decided to conduct ‘water deprivation test’ on the patient based on her symptoms. It is a test wherein the urine production, blood electrolyte and weight is measured regularly for a period of 12 hours, during which the patient is not allowed to drink water. The reports further disclosed that the patient was suffering from Central Diabetes Insipidus, excessive water intake in the absence of physiological stimulito drink water. We went ahead and treated her with medicines that helps in stimulation of vasopressin and she responded well to the treatments. She is now doing fine and is able to carry out all her daily activities.”
The patient said, “Leading a normal life and carrying out my daily chores seemed extremely difficult with the condition. I am thankful to Dr Bhanu and his entire team to be supportive and for helping me regain my life”
Lack of vasopressin can disrupt the functioning of the kidney and the body loses a lot of water in the form of urine. This makes the person thirsty and the water intake increases. One can also experience low blood pressure and even shock if the amount of water intake is less.
