Following the tide | | | The Congress Party has finally abandoned the issue of restoring J&K’s special status. It has stopped talking about the abrogation of the Article 370 and has realized that raking this issue again and again is not going to help its cause as the people across the country have endorsed the decision of the BJP led Central Government which ended the 70-year old ambiguity over Jammu and Kashmir. On August 5, 2019, when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status, the Congress leaders opposed the move and tried to toe the line of the adversaries. But the Congress taking a stand which went against the sentiments in the country triggered an outrage and the party had to eat a humble pie. When the Kashmir centric parties formed Peoples’ Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) some Valley based Congress leaders had lobbied hard to convince the party high command to join the amalgam, which the Valley based parties claimed had been formed to seek the restoration of Article 370. But the Congress high command refused and asked its leaders to stay away from the PAGD that too eventually is at the verge of getting collapsed as one of its main constituents Peoples Conference has pulled out from the amalgam. The Congress has now started demanding restoration of J&K’s statehood. The party seems to have gauged the mood of the people in Jammu and Kashmir. Even in J&K no one is interested in talking about restoration of the Article 370. People want to move ahead and want to become a part of the progress and development. They don’t want to lag behind. They seem least interested in the slogans being raised by Kashmir centric parties. The fall of PAGD that comprises of National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party and a few small parties seems eminent. The cracks in the conglomerate have already appeared and it seems that NC and PDP will also part ways soon as these parties have been unable to build consensus over heading the DDC boards. It’s not only the Congress Party that has fallen in the line National Conference too has dropped enough hints to indicate that it has accepted the change in J&K’s status-quo and wants to move on. The PDP is the only party which looks interested in raising the controversial issues but it too stands decimated. The Congress changing its tone is no surprise as its leaders are aware of the fact that slogans won’t fetch them anything. |
