KATHUA, Mar 6: Openly confronting the Kathua police, Vyopar Mandal Kathua levelled serious allegations against police for what they termed as "late evening police nakas" organized along various roads leading to main market were only to divert public attention from the alleged failure of police to check increasing number of theft incidents in the town.
The Kathua police had organized a series of police Nakas along various roads, leading to Kathua main bazaar and had claimed to penalize the drunk drivers but the police action had not gone well down to the Vyopar Mandal.
Without wasting time and mincing words, the Vyopar Mandal organized a meeting, levelling strong allegations against the Kathua police. The members of Vyopar Mandal alleged that the theft incidents have been on rise in Kathua town as well as in the neighbouring areas but police has totally failed to check these theft incidents.
The Vyopar Mandal also narrated the major theft incidents, witnessed Kathua in last two months and also the callous police response to these incidents. People had openly started criticizing the police functioning and its utter failure to check the theft incidents, despite repeated appeals by the citizens. "Police has totally failed to check theft incidents but to shown their presence organized late evening Police Nakas along all roads, which ultimately desist the customers from coming to the markets", the Vyopar Mandal members said, and in strong worded statement, made it clear to the Police that their tactics to divert the public attention from its failure would not be tolerated. The members also showing their resentment and termed the action of police dictatorial one.
The open confronting of police and allegations of police failure by Vyopar Mandal brought police on back foot and Senior Superintendent of Police tweeted, "Thank u for the co operation, people of Kathua. Apologies for the inconvenience caused. It's temporary...".
Though the SP clarified about the late evening Nakas and termed it a temporary inconvenience but didn't clarify over the allegation, levelled by Vyopar Mandal, about police failure to check the theft incidents. On Friday night again unidentified thieves struck in the house of Kewal Kumar of ward no.7 and decamped with valuables worth several Lakhs of rupees. While as usual the police has claimed to have taken cognizance and started investigation.
