Silence Prevails | | | The Enforcement Directorate questioning Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti in connection with a money laundering case has turned the mainstream leaders in Kashmir silent. Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD)—an amalgam of Kashmir centric parties that was formed last year to get everything back—has not issued any joint statement to express solidarity with Mehbooba. The silence maintained by the PAGD has once again proven it beyond doubt that the bonhomie between PDP, National Conference and other smaller parties has ended. Peoples Conference led by Sajad Gani Lone had pulled out from the conglomerate soon after the results of the District Development Council (DDC) polls were declared. The PC had accused the National Conference of backstabbing the party by fielding proxy candidates in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district. The NC has maintained silence over summoning of Mehbooba Mufti by the ED. When National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate at that point of time, Mehbooba had reacted sharply and had claimed that New Delhi wants to intimidate leaders in Kashmir region. It seems that she was apprehending that she too could face the same fate and then Kashmir centric leaders will stand by her. But it hasn’t happened. She stands isolated, neither her former aides nor her new friends have uttered a word for her. The much hyped PAGD has proved to be a failed experiment as the leaders who had come together to project themselves as the saviours stand scattered. The skeletons that are tumbling out indicate that despite enjoying all the privileges provided by the Centre, the parties like PDP were hand in glove with the separatists and were responsible for keeping the pot boiling. Most of the Kashmir centric politicians are maintaining distance from Mehbooba, they don’t want to be a part of the baggage that the PDP chief is carrying. The recent charge sheet filed by National Investigation Agency against jailed PDP leader, Waheed Para, claims that he had given Rs 5 crore to Hurriyat during the 2016 unrest in Kashmir and party wanted situation in the Valley to remain volatile. Mehbooba is paying a heavy price for dancing to the tunes of Pakistan stooges and her troubles seem to be increasing with each passing day. The PDP stands decimated and the PAGD has become a history as the politicians, who had formed it, seem least interested in carrying forward the alliance. For Mehbooba road seems to have ended.
