Kashmir centric leaders turn silent | | | The second wave of COVID-19 has brought the political activities in Jammu and Kashmir to a grinding halt. Most of the political leaders have gone into hibernation. But the resurgence of pestilence has provided a much needed breather to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mehbooba Mufti, who was caught in the midst of controversies during the last two months. Mehbooba had to face the questioning from Enforcement Directorate sleuths, passport was denied to her and most of her close aides deserted the party. After the COVID resurgence, Mehbooba has turned silent. It appears that she has realized that taking New Delhi head on won’t help her cause and if she doesn’t mend her ways she will end up in more trouble. Other Kashmir centric leaders, like National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah, Peoples Conference chairman, Sajad Lone, too seem to have taken a break. Dr Farooq Abdullah and his son, Omar had tested positive for the COVID-19. Even the senior Peoples Conference leader, Muzaffar Hussain Beigh, and his wife had tested positive. However, all of them have recovered. For time being Kashmir centric leaders don’t seem to have any role as the delimitation process will still take time to get completed. The National Conference and Peoples Conference have apparently accepted the change in J&K’s status-quo and both these parties want to move ahead. The only party that had tried to act tough was the PDP. It too has lost that sting as at present Mehbooba is standing alone. Her silence seems to be an indication that she too wants to bury the hatchet to save her skin. After August 5, 2019, the political situation in Jammu and Kashmir has changed drastically. The Kashmir centric leaders who used to thrive on rhetoric and mere sloganeering have been left on crossroads. They have to look for new slogans to survive. The ongoing COVID-19 wave is an opportunity for the Kashmir centric leaders to sit back and think what they should do. During the past one and a half year one thing has become clear that Kashmir centric leaders cannot get anything back. They cannot fight elections by raising hollow slogans. People of J&K are aware of the fact that the status of the erstwhile state has changed and dream merchants can no more sell the dreams. |
