Soz urges doctors to prescribe medicines with generic names
5/24/2021 10:29:27 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

SRINAGAR, May 24:Urging doctors to prescribe medicines with generic names only, former union minister and senior Congress leader Prof Saifuddin Soz on Monday said it will promote a reform in the Medical Profession, bringing relief to the patients and their attendants besides also keep the fraudulent elements at bay.
“Today, I proposed to president Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) to issue a circular advising the general run of medical professional in Kashmir to prescriber medicine with generic names only, Prof Soz said in a statement this afternoon.
He said he explained further that such an endeavour will promote a reform in the medical profession, bringing relief to the patients and their attendants. It will also keep the fraudulent elements at bay.
He said, “I had proposed this kind of reform to the Union Health Minister long ago, but it did not work well. That is to say, it did not produce any result then”.
This reform is so very easy, but there is a lot of corruption in the medical profession and I think this easy reform will not be adopted so very easily and so soon, he said. Prof Soz said he had proposed to the Union Health Minister, Harsh Vardhan, today, that he should simply order medical professionals to prescribe medicines carrying Generic Names instead of the names given to these by the Companies. So, in a way, companies are In-charge of the health of the citizens, not the Health Ministry and the general run of Medical Professionals.
"This is a dangerous practice, but not so easy to reform. But, then, ideas have wings and it will happen someday," he said.
