‘Honeytrap’, new modus operandi by fraudsters to blackmail people; stay alert, warns Jammu Police | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 24: Warning people of online frauds especially on social media platforms like Facebook and Whatsapp, Jammu Police said that ‘Honeytrap’ is the new modus operandi by the fraudsters and indulge in blackmailing practice. Investigating cases of online frauds after several complaints were lodged, Jammu Police have issued an Advisory to inform people about latest trends of FB, Whatsapp and its precautions as well as remedies. As per the advisory, police said that a friend request is sent from some unknown person probably a female having mutual friends on Facebook, which is often accepted by the user. “The request sender starts chatting and during conversation in many cases, people share whatsapp number with the unknown fraudster,” said the advisory adding that subsequently, a video chat request is received and the fraudster plays a trick and gets undressed and also instigate the users as well and mostly people are trapped. The Advisory further read that the fraudster records the chat video with live image and starts blackmailing for money to avoid publishing obscene video on social media and to the friends of users. “Once the money is paid, the demand goes on increasing,” the police advisory read. However, sharing preventions and remedies, it further read that a message must be shared on the wall to alert all FB friends about the fraud and social media operators. “Also report such incidents to the nearby Police Station and never entertain the money request, never accept video calls from unknown persons, never indulge in obscenity on video calls,” it read. Police also advised users to spare some time to apply privacy to social media accounts including FB/Insta/Whatsapp/Twitter etc. with minimum display of personnel details on wall for public like mobile number, email, date of birth, family, working details etc. “Remove all unknown/partially known facebook friends from the friend list. Also remove all accounts of a friend having double/triple profiles. There is a probability that fake accounts are added,” it read. “Always accept friend requests of known persons after personal, telephonic confirmation to avoid entry of a fake account in the friend list, apply security to accounts including Two Factor authentication, strong passwords having combination of small, capital letters, numbers and special characters,” the advisory read. |
