Quiz on Economic Botany held

Jammu, May 24: During the period of lockdown, Department of Botany of GCW Udhampur has conducted an online quiz on the topic, “Economic Botany”. The quiz was organized as a part of Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsva.
The quiz was attended by about 122 students from all over the UT of J&K. Some students from outside of J&K have also participated in the quiz including Delhi and Dehradun. All the students were awarded with E-certificates after getting a desired score or percentage. A large number of students from B.Sc. Sem VI from GCW Udhampur has participated in the quiz since the topic of quiz was being a part of their syllabus. Some of them to mention here were Ashleen Kour, Uma Koul, Jyoti Sharma, Anju, Pritika Sharma, Shivani Sharma, Vishali, Akankasha Sharma, Ritu Devi, Anita Sharma, Akanksha Dikshit and Kajal rani.
The quiz was based on an important branch of botany called Economic botany which is the study of the relationship between people (individuals and cultures) and plants. It also deals with the economic plants which are being useful either directly, as in food, or indirectly, as products we use or that enhance the environment.
Principal Minu Mahajan appreciated the organizers Prof Ashni Devi and Dr. Kewal Kumar of Department of Botany for organizing the quiz.
She emphasized that Plants are essential to life on earth; they produce the oxygen we breathe through photosynthesis and provide much of the food we eat. Some species provide medicines and promote healing; others are used for insect control or to conserve water.
It is the need of hour to know the value of plants and to conserve them. Such activities besides increasing the knowledge of students regarding the importance of plants in their lives will also make them to think about the various measures and ways to protect them. She also desired from every student to plant more and more trees.
