Early Times Report

Srinagar, July 13: In a historic development that has finally brought end to hartal politics on July 13, business remained as usual in the summer capital of Srinagar here on Tuesday. Since morning, the shops were open and transport plied as usual even in the Central Business District and adjoining areas like Batamaloo and Dalgate.
While deployment of police was seen on alert to prevent any “mischief by the anti-national elements”, senior police officials including the Inspector General of Police were seen personally monitoring the situation in the main markets and elsewhere.
A transporter said any stone pelting could have sabotaged the normal life on the day but that “police bandobast helped them earn their livelihood.”
Observers said it was for the first time that “incident free normal day was observed in Srinagar.”
Sources said senior police officials opted to march on foot across Srinagar to remain in touch with the people throughout the day.
Sources said as a part of the special assignment, none of the senior officials posted in Srinagar traveled in their armored vehicles for on the spot assessment of the situation as the Senior Superintendent of Police, Sandeep Choudhary was seen personally leading them in various areas.
Source said the police had decided to ensure support for normal life on the day by being personally present on the ground much in touch with the people.
It was reliably learnt that police had been working on the plan to end hartal politics and that cops kept eagles eye on the situation.
“Not even any incident of stone pelting or anyone trying to stage roadside demonstrations took place across the city,” said a political observer.
“It was unbelievable to see business as normal in the summer capital where people had given up hope of any normalcy on the day for all these years of militancy,” said a university teacher on the condition of anonymity.
