People of Kashmir saying no to July 13 “Martys Day” has once again proven it beyond doubt that all the days and anniversaries in Kashmir were the creations of politi cians.
Till 2019, politicians from all the camps used to make a beeline at Martyrs graveyard in Srinagar to pay homage to July 13, 1931 martyrs. The narrative, which Kashmir centric politicians sold since 1947 was that the slain men revolted against Maharaja’s rule and they fought against so-called oppression, their narratives and slogans created a regional divide between Jammu and Kashmir for the 70-years and they thrived on it.
After August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and divided it into two union territories—Jammu and Kashmir have been brought at par. The message is clear that no one will be allowed to pit Jammu against Kashmir and vice-versa.
During the past two years many things have become clear but the biggest thing which has come to fore is that all the problems that were created in Kashmir were superficial and politicians left no stone unturned to ensure that uncertainty prevails. Kashmir has not witnessed any shutdown or street protests during the past two years. Nor have there been any chalo calls. Whatever used to happen in Kashmir was orchestrated and had the backing of Kashmiri leaders from either the separatist or mainstream camp.
The Centre’s decision to merge J&K into the Union of India completely has settled all the issues once for all. Now, no days are being observed neither, are any occasions being celebrated.
New India is about nationalism and the leaders who are uncomfortable to be nationalists are welcome to leave the country and settle in the places of their liking. Kashmir centric politicians need to realize that the line has been drawn and people are no more interested in their politics. They can no longer sell illusions and dreams to them by referring to the events that have occurred 90-years ago. Entire world is progressing at a fast pace and no place on earth is stuck in the past. Till August 5, 2019, Kashmir was the only place in the world where leaders used to talk about reversing the clock rather than marching ahead. But the time has proven them wrong as people are no more interested in what happened on July 13, 1931, they are living in 2021 and want to move on.
