Separatism a closed chapter | | | The abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir has cut the separatists to size. They have become irrelevant and non-existent. After August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and bifurcated it into two union territories—no one in Kashmir is talking about Azadi and Pakistan as the handful of people who used to preach sedition and separatism stand nowhere. They have lost their addresses and no one is interested in their brand of politics. People of Kashmir have realized that Azadi is an illusion and it’s an unachievable feat. For the past 2-years Kashmir has not witnessed any shutdowns or street protests. People are busy in their daily chores and have gone ahead with their lives. Kashmir did not witness any protest or stone-pelting incidents after the abrogation of Article 370. Ones who had predicted that Kashmir will burn were left red faced. Their predictions fell flat. Last two years have proven beyond doubt that no one in Kashmir was interested in J&K’s special status. Soon after the abrogation of the Article 370, mainstream parties in Kashmir, especially Peoples Democratic Party, had tried to don the mantle of separatists and made an attempt to up the ante. Several attempts were made by the PDP leaders to raise the pitch and instigate the people to come out on streets and stage protests. But all their attempts were thwarted and life went on smoothly. Separatists, who till 2019 used to dictate terms, during the past two years have turned into non-entities. People have even forgotten their names. Security forces have an upper hand over the militants and their overground workers. During the past two years the backbone of militants has been broken. Policy of the security forces is clear that the ones who have picked up the arms won’t be spared and they will be dealt with an iron fist. The Jammu and Kashmir is heading towards normalcy as militancy is at its fag end. The separatists have become history. The henchmen of separatists, who used to follow their diktats have taken up menial jobs and they are no longer in a position to orchestrate street protests and preach radicalization. J&K is changing and it’s changing for the good. |
