Jammu, July 30: Maharishi Dayanand Sarswati Chair of Central University of Jammu has released a book entitled “Swami Dayanand Sarswati On Women’s Status And Emancipation” written by Chair Professor Raj K. Mahajan. The book was released by Prof. Ashok Aima, Vice-chancellor, Central University of Jammu. The other members present on this occasion were Prof. Devanand, Dean Academics, Dr. Ravi Kumar Bhat, Registrar, Prof. Sunil Dhar, Prof. Mushtaq Ahmed, Prof. Rasal Singh, Prof. Jaya Bhasin, Dr. Yashwant Singh, Dr. Bachha Babu and Dr. Parveen Kumari. The female population constitutes almost half of the population of India. Therefore, their status and empowerment are important for the regeneration, efficiency and development of India. Studies show that the condition of women was better in the Vedic period. However, over time, the wedge between the condition and status of females and males has been increasing. There were evil social practices like female infanticide, child marriage, sati, polygamy, etc. before independence. Women were treated badly both in the household as well as in society. Swami Dayanand Saraswati was a unique sanyansi who was a nationalist, visionary, social reformer, as well as a revivalist. He struggled hard to bring equal opportunities between both males and females, and amelioration of rituals which went against women’s freedom, emancipation, and empowerment. He wanted women to have the status which they enjoyed during the Vedic period. Swami Dayanand Saraswati strongly advocated female education.
