Bureaucrats disappoint Jammu | | | The Centre’s decision to turn Jammu and Kashmir into a Union Territory two years ago had made people in Jammu region believe that time has changed and the discrimination with them has ended. Unfortunately their hopes have been shattered due to alleged lackadaisical attitude of a few officials. The New Liquor Policy that was introduced a few months ago rendered hundreds of people in Jammu region jobless. Pleas of the traders associated with the liquor trade and the ones who were working in the various outlets fell on deaf ears. Similarly mining trade has been taken over by the people from outside Jammu, and the calling off Darbar Move practice has broken the back of Jammu traders. It appears that a coterie of a few bureaucrats is misleading Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and is feeding him with the wrong information. LG Sinha is working hard for deliverance of good governance in Naya Jammu and Kashmir but his foot soldiers seem hell bent upon sabotaging the development plans. The prestigious Prime Minister’s Development Package is facing roadblocks due to allegedly irresponsible behavior of some officials. Bills to the tune of crores of rupees are pending in the Civil Secretariat for the execution of various projects under the PMDP. The projects were executed through the Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited or KPDCL and the bills were sent to the concerned offices in Civil Secretariat, where officials started to pass the buck. When Kashmir centric leaders were ruling Jammu and Kashmir they slept over the centrally sponsored schemes and didn’t allow the benefits to trickle down to the grass root level. After August 5, 2019, people were hoping that the things would change but it hasn’t happened as the bureaucrats are acting as monarchs and are running the Union Territory according to their whims and fancies. Many daily wagers and need-based workers are agitating to get regular salaries amid unprecedented hike in prices of essential commodities, some officers are brazenly indulging in spending government money for the renovation of their palatial bungalows. Is this austerity? The Centre needs to take a note of all these issues and act so that benefits of the abrogation of Article 370 are visible on the ground. The helmsmen need to introspect and see for themselves how they are handling the affairs of J&K. |
