Jammu awaits change | | | Jammu region has been facing development issues for the past 70-years as the Kashmir centric rulers didn’t pay much heed towards addressing the concerns of people during their tenures. But after the abrogation of Article 370 and J&K’s transition into a union territory, Jammuties were hoping that discrimination with Jammu region would end, but it hasn’t happened. Many people in Jammu are of the opinion that nothing has changed on the ground and the condition of a common man has turned from bad to worse. Recently, president of Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industries (JCCI), Arun Gupta, expressed dismay over parliamentarians keeping their visits confined to Kashmir only and ignoring Jammu completely. It’s unfortunate that despite change of guard, helmsmen are focusing still on Kashmir and Jammu continues to get sidelined. The bureaucrats who are running the system seem in no mood to listen to the grievances of the people, nor do they look interested in addressing the issues which touch the skin of a common man. Many areas within the Jammu city are craving for the basic amenities but the authorities seem least interested in making the life easy for a common man. The heritage bazaar of Jammu city, Jain Bazaar, is a glaring instance of the official apathy. The road passing through the important market is in a dilapidated condition. The shopkeepers have been staging protests to get the road repaired but no one is listening to them. Similarly there are many areas in Jammu city that have no proper roads, garbage collection system and proper drains. The scene is no better in rural areas. The lackadaisical attitude of the officials has disappointed the people of Jammu region to a great extent. They are waiting for a change that was promised to them. Members of Mahajan, Khatri and Sikh communities have been running from pillar to post to get the discriminatory land law amended. The law prevents them from buying or selling the agricultural land. The members of these communities had gone out of way to ensure that BJP wins 25 out of 37 seats in the 2014 assembly elections. The dispensation backed by the same party for which they voted has left them in lurch and no one is paying any attention towards their plight. |
