9/12/2021 11:44:53 PM
Early Times Report
UDHAMPUR, Sept 12: "Once Udhampur was known for its natural bowlis and ponds which have disappeared with the passage of time," said NGO Jiyo Aur Jeene Do, president, Tariq Shah.
Addressing a press conference here today, Tariq Shah said that natural sources of water like Salain Talab, Jojde Talab, Gaira pond and several others do not exist now.
"There were about 108 bowlis and many ponds in Udhampur at one time", he said, adding that the ponds that are left now are being eyed by the land mafia.
Ponds not only collect water but are a good source of life for humans as well as that of animals, he said, adding that water bodies made by our ancestors used to store rain water and were great assets.
He further said that if we talk about Devak river, which is the centre of everyone's faith. But it is a matter of great concern that till today from and around Devak the encroachment has not been removed.
Shah made an appeal to the administration to take steps in this direction. Even today, after little rain, dead bodies are being washed away, and such accidents are very unfortunate and its a very sad state of affairs, he added. General Secretary Parveen Akhter, Ali, Sham, Anju and others were present on this occasion.
