Disturbing Figures
9/16/2021 11:50:56 PM

Recent report released by the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) has revealed that crime rate in Jammu and Kashmir against women has risen by 11 percent from 2019 to 2020. The increase in crime rate against women is distributing.
According to the NCRB report 247 rape cases were reported in Jammu and Kashmir and two in Ladakh from January 1 to December 31, 2020. The victims included four girls below the age of 18 years. In majority cases, the rape victims were in the age group of 18 to 30 years (180 cases), followed by 30-45 years (55 cases) and 45-60 years (nine cases).
In all the rape cases except one, the offenders were known to the victims, either through family or friends. In 26 cases, the offender was family member while in 216 cases, the offender was either friend or neighbor or employer or other known person. There was only one case where the victim did not know the accused.
These are alarming figures and more disturbing is the fact that offenders who were involved in the rape were known to victims. This indicates the moral degradation that our society is witnessing. All the right thinking people need to come forward and create awareness against the morals and ethics which are embedded in our culture and society. Rape is a heinous crime and the perpetrators need to be given an exemplary punishment so that they don’t dare to indulge in such an act.
Men need to realize that women are not inferior to them as they are competing with the men in every field. In many areas women are doing much better than men and are leading from the front. Men who think that women have no rights and they are weak need to change their mindset.
During the past few years many stringent laws have been passed to deal with the rapists and no mercy is being shown towards such criminals, who outrage the modesty and chastity of a woman. Reformation has to start from within our homes, we have to inculcate the moral values among our children from a very young age.
We need to teach young boys from the very beginning that women have to be respected and treated at par with men.
