Amid searches in Uri, Baramulla, Sopore on high alert | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Sept 22: With the security forces and the intelligence agencies apprehending infiltration in Uri sector of north Kashmir, neighboring Baramulla town has been put on alert. Even as that Indian Army said on September 21 that it was engaged in a major operation in Jammu and Kashmir for the second day in a row following what is believed to be the “biggest infiltration attempt by terrorists from across the Line of Control in recent years,” an alert has been sounded in adjoining Baramulla and Sopore towns of the district. It’s pertinent to mention that the internet services and mobile phones have already been suspended in the Uri sector of north Kashmir since Monday morning. Sources said the deployment of security forces in Baramulla town has been beefed up as also the night vigil. “Night vigil in particular has been beefed up as the forces don’t want to take any chances,” said a police official on the condition of anonymity. Official sources said the infiltration attempt was detected on September 18 evening, coinciding with the fifth anniversary of the Uri attack in which 19 soldiers were killed after two suicide attackers stormed a military installation on September 18, 2016. The intelligence agencies have inputs that a group of militants may have infiltrated into the Indian territory. The official sources said the Army operation to track down the infiltrators is underway but declined to share any information about the operation. Sources said the reason of putting Baramulla on alert was to see if the apprehended infiltrators would try to establish contact with the over ground workers of the militants active in the district. This is for the first time when phone services and the internet have been suspended in the wake of a cross-border infiltration attempt. |
