9/23/2021 9:10:02 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT

Srinagar, Sept 23: The Army on Thursday paid rich tribute to a soldier, whose decomposed body was recovered on Wednesday, over a year after he was abducted by militants in south Kashmir. Defence Ministry spokesperson Colonel Emron Musavi said that General officer Commanding (GoC), 15 Corps, Lieutenant General D P Pandey and all ranks laid wreaths on the mortal remains of the braveheart, Rifleman Shakir Manzoor Wagay of 162 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) at Chinar Corps War Memorial. “Rifleman Shakir Manzoor Wagay was on bonafide military duty at Balapur in Shopian on August 2, 2020 when he went missing,” he said. He said security forces had launched an extensive search at that time to locate him. “After comprehensive search, his burnt vehicle was found at Rambhama, Kulgam,” he said. However, he said despite persistent efforts of the security forces; Rifleman Wagay could not be traced.
“His father, Manzoor Ahmed Wagay, anticipated that his son had been abducted by militants. Some anti-national social media accounts had alleged at that time that Rifleman Wagay had been killed and that his body had been deliberately buried at an unidentified location,” Col Musavi said.
He said on September 22, 2021, an unidentified decomposed body was found at village Mohandpura, Kulgam. “The father of Rifleman Wagay identified the body as that of his son,” he said.
He said as per the post mortem report, the death of the soldier is attributable to grievous injuries, adding the injury marks on him indicate that Rifleman Wagay was tortured and murdered in the most brutal and inhumane manner by the militants.
“The soldier was 26 years old and had joined the Army on June 2, 2016. He belonged to Village Rishipura, PO - Herman, Tehsil - Herman, District – Shopian and is survived by his parents,” the spokesperson said.
He said the mortal remains of Rifleman Wagay will be taken for last rites to his native place, where he would be laid to rest with full military honours. “In this hour of grief, the Army stands in solidarity with the bereaved family and remains committed to their dignity and wellbeing,” he said.
“The Indian Army condemns this heinous crime. The sacrifice of the braveheart in service of the country will not go in vain. All means will be utilised to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice. Indian Army salutes the bravery of the departed son and soldier of India,” he added.
