Jammu, Oct 11: Even as seven civilians were recently killed in Kashmir in six days, the government went ahead with its series of scheduled celebrations straight weeklong. As per the official handouts released by the government of Jammu and Kashmir, numerous celebrations went on undeterred even on the day when two teachers were shot dead in Srinagar on October 7. As per official handouts of the Information Department, some of the celebrations went on straight for a week. “A valedictory function to mark Iconic week celebrations under Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav was organized by the Department of Wildlife at camping Hokersar Wetland Reserve (RAMSAR site) today,” said an official handout released by the Information department on October 10. “Prizes were distributed amongst the meritorious students of “Painting/ Poster Making competition” and “Run for Hokera” events and also certificate of participation were awarded among various students, Wildlife Mitra’s, N.G.O members who participated in week long events,” the handout said. Ironically on the day when two teachers were shot dead, while police kickstarted its Jashne Dal, the officials from the Directorate of School Education Kashmir were seen enjoying an event amid claps from book readers including students. On October 7, militants shot dead two teachers in a government school in Eidgah area of Srinagar taking the toll of civilian killings across Kashmir Valley to seven in six days. The teacher duo was identified as Supinder Kour, 46 of Budgam and Deepak Chand, 39 from Janipur in Jammu, who were targeted inside the campus of Government Boys Higher Secondary School Sangam of Eidgah in Srinagar city. Earlier, popular pharmacy owner ML Bindro and a gole guppa wala Virendra Paswan from Bihar were among those shot dead in the summer capital. Before this, two civilians were killed in the civil lines of Srinagar. The Jammu and Kashmir government has come under severe criticism for alleged being callous towards the tragedy that had befallen the region. Observers have been saying that the government could have avoided such celebrations in testing times when the civilian life was at stake. |
