Cong forgets Jammu troubles | | | Congress leaders seem to have given up Jammu as their constituency. It was evident on Monday when they staged a protest outside Raj Bhavan in Jammu against Lakhmipur incident. They were more concerned about seeking the resignation of a Minister of State in Uttar Pradesh, whose son is alleged to have been sitting in a vehicle which mowed four farmers. The Congress leaders and activists were asked to stage a protest by their leader Rahul Gandhi as the elections in Uttar Pradesh are on cards. After being ousted from power in 2014 the Congress leaders in Jammu have become non-existent. During the past seven years they have not made any attempt to raise the issues concerning the people of Jammu. They have staged a few symbolic protests but have failed to raise the issues which touch the skin of a common man in Jammu. The Congress Party has not even made an attempt to express solidarity with the business fraternity of Jammu region, which has been facing onslaught from all the sides. After being hit by the pandemic for 2-years, the arbitrary orders issued by the authorities, including the scrapping of 149-year old Darbar Move practice, have broken the backs of Jammu people. The Congress leaders who are staging protests to express solidarity with the farmers in Uttar Pradesh should realize that they have to contest the elections in Jammu and not in UP. The Congress Party used to claim that Jammu is its bastion and it’s the voice of people. But during the past few years the party’s base stands eroded and people too seem to have abandoned it. The Congress has failed as an opposition and has provided a chance to other parties to make inroads into the region. Smaller parties do raise their voice but they are not proving to be that effective due to these being confined to a particular region. Had the Jammu Congress leaders shown some agility, they could have taken up the issues of Jammu people with the party high command so their issues could have got highlighted at the national level. The Congress Party needs to rethink its strategy vis-à-vis Jammu. If it fails to do so, it can face a rout in the assembly elections, whenever these are held in J&K, time is running out for the “Grand Old Party” of the country. |
